McDonald's Gospelfest Bronx Concert reviews
Great show, some caveats
"Since the '60's, I've been listening to Carlos and this was only the second time I've seen McDonald's Gospelfest. Generally speaking, Blue Hills is a nice outdoors venue, right on the harbor. Last year, we saw Sting there and enjoyed it. An issue for us was that the sound seemed muddied and so, impacted the power of some of the songs, even though we really liked this show. For example, when they played "Smooth," we didn't get the same impact from it as the recorded version. Somehow it got lost in the surroundings.
Unfortunately, Carlos' guitar did not pierce through as I would have liked, even though he is one of the best, most distinctive players ever. My wife really likes "Europa" and with the sound issues, didn't even recognize it at first. There were times the band didn't sound tight and I couldn't figure out if that was really the case or if it was just the sound. We had pretty good seats, maybe twenty rows back. Couldn't get a decent picture of Carlos on the big screen as there was a large speaker hanging right over his face.
The hits (Soul Sacrifice, Maria Maria, Jingo, Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, Oye Come Va) were there as were stuff from Corazon and even "A Love Supreme."
A low point, part of what kept this show from greatness, was a three-song set from Carlos' son, which really lost the crowd elsewhere. Everybody had been standing and now sat, bored and, I think, somewhat put off. It wasn't so much that he was rapping per se, at least for me. It's just that I didn't much care for his songs. He was frantically running around from mic to keyboard, singing with some woman. They reminded me of a poor man's Black Eyed Peas. Since the sound was muddy, I did not know it was his son. So I figured it was just a band member and Carlos was making another (not always successful) attempt to connect with a younger crowd.
Glad we went. The stuff that sucked, sucked. But the stuff that was great made it worth while. Plus, Tequila!"
